It’s no secret that the life of a modern person is full of stresses, but everyone struggles with them in different ways: some give a way out of the negative, plunging into the world of gambling, others “fill” stress with alcohol, and others even abstract from worldly vanity, going in search of secret meanings of being … Andresr Shutterstock.com Among the variety of ways to relieve tension, there is one seemingly innocent – shopaholism, or shopping addiction – an irresistible and uncontrollable desire to shop, buying indiscriminately everything in large quantities. Psychologists believe shopaholism is a disease that struck the world at the end of the last century: it was then that favorable conditions were created for this – large shops began to open, promotions and sales took place. The first woman shopaholic is Barbara Zelinski, an American who had the talent to spend the entire monthly earnings of her spouse for two and a half minutes. As you can probably guess, this marriage was not long … There are many varieties of shopaholism, however, one of the most striking manifestations of it is seilomania, signs of which can be found from time to time by everyone: the “discount” , provoking to make impulse, useless or completely unnecessary purchases. That is why salesmanship is also called the mania of sales and discounts. Not far from it, brandmania has gone – an obsessive desire to acquire products or services of specific brands, and gadget addiction is a relatively new disorder associated with an obsessive desire to have the latest electronic gadgets as indicators of “status” even in the absence of the need for them. What is the basis of shopmania? Oddly enough, this is the pursuit of happiness. A shopping trip is a great way to relieve stress, moreover, it is safer than, for example, drinking alcohol: you walk around, slowly, between shop windows, admire the assortment and get something beautiful … It becomes a problem when it becomes a habit, in the means of getting rid of the feeling of inner emptiness and develops into dependence. When shopaholism obsessive desire to buy pursues a person regardless of the consequences and whether these purchases are justified or not: they turn into rest, become entertainment, are endowed with independent meaning. To a large extent contributes to the spread of this evil intrusive advertising, attracting to work on the problem “How best to create the illusion of happiness of owning one or another subject,” the whole team of psychologists and marketers. Why does shopping bring us so much positive emotions? While shopping for a person, the level of serotonin rises in the blood – the hormone of happiness, which reduces anxiety, improves mood, and allows a person to feel great. In addition, for many, an important factor is the ability to purchase items in expensive stores – this fact increases their self-esteem and often helps to gain respect in a society that, as you know, “meets clothes”, especially today, when brand insanity has become widespread. One of the main reasons for shopaholism is the habit of a person to have everything he wants. Usually this quality is instilled from childhood by parents who unconditionally fulfill all the requirements of their children and indulge all whims without denying anything. As an adult, such a child himself continues to spend the same thoughtlessly and uncontrollably money. Sometimes, however, everything can be exactly the opposite: children who grew up in families with more than modest prosperity, having matured, as if stupefied by freedom and begin to “come off” in full, buying everything in a row and thus compensating for all the hardships of their childhood. The cause of shopmania can be dissatisfaction with their family life, namely, interpersonal relations with the spouse. It is not without reason that there are so many shopaholics among the wives of successful, successful men who do not have enough time for their faithful: all these disadvantages of love and attention of a woman are more than compensated for by endless purchases. Underdevelopment of personality is another fertile ground for the development of unbridled craving for shopping. If a person has a lot of free time, he is not interested in anything and does not build a career, shopping trips serve as a pleasant and effective way to kill time, which later, especially if you have money, can easily be transformed into a problem. Varieties of shopaholics Considering the fact that shopaholism has been put in a row of serious psychological disorders, scientists cite several classifications of this ailment. So, for example, in the manner of behavior, psychologists have identified spontaneous, conscious and purposeful shopaholics. A spontaneous shopaholic does not consider himself to be such at all, he calmly goes to the store, intending to buy something definite, but in the process of buying it can grab something unplanned that he liked or tempted with something with his low price.
